Pocket Reduction Surgery

Even if your gum disease is more advanced, there are still steps our dentists can take to help you manage your condition and maintain the health of your smile. Dr. George Skoog may want to see you for a gingivectomy, or pocket reduction surgery, in Palatine, Illinois. Call Advocate Dental of Palatine at 847-359-8732 to schedule your visit and learn more.

Gingivectomy, also known as pocket reduction or flap surgery, is a surgical procedure used to remove bacteria and calculus from the roots of your teeth when you have periodontal disease.

At any given time, there are dozens of different types of bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria produce acid which inflames and infects your gums, leading to the development of periodontal disease. Gingivectomy works to eliminate these bacteria and reduce inflammation in your mouth in order to save your gums and teeth.

Gingivectomy helps to:

  • Reduce bacterial spread
  • Halt bone loss
  • Facilitate effective home care

Our dentists will begin by administering a local or general anesthetic to ensure your comfort during this procedure. Your gums will then be gently pulled back from your teeth and bacteria and calculus will be removed, usually through scaling and root planing. At the end of your procedure, our dentists will administer an antimicrobial agent to kill any remaining bacteria and encourage healing. Your gums will then be sutured back into place to prevent shifting.

Following your gingivectomy, you may experience an increase in gum and tooth sensitivity. Your periodontal pockets should be reduced, and you should see an improvement in the health of your teeth and gums within a few weeks.

Patient Reviews

Dr. Skoog is very dedicated to his work and the well-being of his patients. On two different circumstances he was able to squeeze me in when he had a fully booked day. He is very good with understanding a patient’s apprehension of dentists. 🙂

So appreciative to Dr. Skoog for taking care of my husband’s terrible toothache during the holiday season. We are not patients of Dr. Skoog as we live out of state. He stayed late on a Saturday to alleviate my husband’s pain. We can’t thank him enough! Highly recommend.
